Neurofeedback for PTSD

Neurofeedback for PTSD: Calming the Inner Storm

You’ve done the work.

Talked it through, named your patterns, learned the language of your nervous system.
You journal, meditate, do the breathing exercises and know the difference between fight, flight, freeze, and fawn.

But still… something in your system won’t quite let go.

That edge of tension that never fully leaves your body.
Those quick emotional responses that you know are in excess of what the moment needs.
The sleep that comes, but never feels deeply restful.
The sense that your body is still bracing and on alert, even when you tell yourself, “I’m safe now.”

If this feels familiar, you’re not alone—and you’re not doing anything wrong. Sometimes, the system needs more than insight and wellness strategies. It needs direct brain feedback so that all of you, even your deepest brain structures can register safety.

Your Brain Can Learn to Feel Safe Again

This is where NeurOptimal neurofeedback for PTSD comes in.

Unlike traditional talk therapy or even body-based practices, neurofeedback works directly with the brain’s electrical activity and how it communicates with the nervous system. There’s no need to effort, analyse, or consciously process anything. For many of my clients—especially those who’ve spent years trying to feel better—that’s one of its most welcome qualities.

NeurOptimal acts like a mirror for your brain. Think of it like walking past a shop window, catching your reflection, and noticing a smudge on your face you hadn’t realised was there. Your instinct would be to wipe it away. Your brain does the same.

The real-time reflection NeurOptimal provides prompts your brain to gently self-correct any activity that’s inefficient or out of sync with the present moment. Over time, this allows your brain to let go of old, outdated patterns—helping you feel more grounded, calm, and resilient. Your inner world becomes less like an unpredictable storm and more like a steady anchor you can return to.

PTSD, Complex Trauma, and the Long Road to Safety

You might not even use the word PTSD to describe your experience. But if your nervous system is still carrying the imprint of past overwhelm—whether from childhood, relationships, or a high-stress life—it’s worth recognising that you’re living with a form of ongoing survival stress.

Neurofeedback supports your system in moving out of survival, and into flow, safety, and deep resilience.

No force. No story rehashing. Just gentle, data-driven support for a brain that wants to heal.

But don’t take my word for it here is a link To Bessel Van Der Kolk’s (Author of The Body Keeps The Score) research paper for the positive outcomes for PTSD with Neurofeedback.    The Conclusion of the study states: We found that neurofeedback significantly reduced PTSD symptoms and preceded gains in affect regulation.

How Neurofeedback for PTSD Works (In Plain English)

Electrodes are placed on your scalp and ears. These measure your brainwave activity, looking for particular changes in activity. A computer reads this data and provides the feedback (via small breaks in a relaxing audio track you’ll be listening to). This real-time feedback, timed exactly with your brain’s shifts in activity, is what provides the mirror and helps your brain start to ‘see’ its own activity.

Your brain finally has the chance to say: “Oh… that? I don’t need to do that anymore.”

Session by session, your brain learns. Over time your brain will have had a chance to reassess more and more of its less than optimal activity and you will finally be supported by a brain and nervous system that is much better at self regulating.

Why It’s a Fit for the Season You’re In

If you’ve already done a lot of healing, but still feel stuck in certain patterns, neurofeedback can be the piece that shifts your state, not just your understanding.

Clients often tell me:

  • “I didn’t even realise how tightly I was holding on until I let go.”

  • “I didn’t need to talk through it—I just felt calmer and clearer.”

  • “It was the first time in years I woke up feeling rested.”

  • “It gave me the headspace to feel different and respond more calmly.”

This isn’t a necessarily quick fix. But it is deeply supportive in a way that, for most, feels completely new. Most of my clients tell me they feel as if something has been processed at a deeper level. Neurofeedback works effortlessly, especially when paired with the kind of self-awareness and tools you already have.

You Don’t Need to Do More. Your Brain Just Needed The Right Support.

That’s the beauty of this work—it doesn’t ask more from you. It simply meets you where you are and supports your brain in doing what it’s designed to do: find its way back to balance.
