Are You Coping with Stress but Recovering? A Stress Self-Audit

If youโ€™re functioning but not feeling restored, this is worth checking.

Recovery often builds because people have strong โ€œcopingโ€ muscles. They can override signals and keep going, which looks like resilience, until it no longer does.

So hereโ€™s a straightforward audit.

Which of these are currently propping you up?
โ€ข caffeine (or sugar) to get started or beat the slump
โ€ข pushing through fatigue and telling yourself youโ€™ll โ€œcatch up laterโ€ or youโ€™re fine
โ€ข training that gives a short-term lift but leaves you more depleted afterwards
โ€ข constant thinking/planning/problem-solving as a way to feel in control
โ€ข staying busy so you donโ€™t come down
โ€ข scrolling/TV late to switch off, but sleep or mornings dont feel refreshing

In my experience, people do generally know when they are doing too much or the wrong things. So listening to what you already know to be true is a good self-check-in.

Just one, rather than ten initially. This can remind you that you have a choice.

Examples:
โ€ข a hard stop time twice this week
โ€ข one delegated task
โ€ข one meeting declined
โ€ข one โ€œIโ€™ll reply tomorrowโ€ instead of immediate availability

The goal is to reduce the load incrementally. Better this than an enforced stop later.

Ten minutes with no input in the middle of the day. Try softening your gaze and allow your eye muscles to relax their concentration. Just a clear signal to your nervous system that mobilisation can stop.

Or choose one of the following:
โ€ข a walk without a podcast
โ€ข slow stretching with attention on sensation
โ€ข sitting with a tea and no phone
โ€ข conscious breathing
โ€ข anything simple, embodied, low cognitive-load

Cumulatively, these tell your nervous system that there is flexibility and recovery is accessible.

What to notice over 7 days
do you experience a little more capacity?
do you feel less braced?
is your reactivity reduced?
does energy feel more consistent?

If you do, thatโ€™s recovery capacity starting to return.

Hi, Iโ€™m Nicola Turner, MSc. I bring 17 years of psychological practice, 10 years in HR, an MSc in CBT and specialist training in physiological recovery, nervous system regulation and body-based approaches.

My approach to nervous system training brings together an understanding of how body, mind, brain and environment interact under stress, and how you can work with those patterns to navigate lifeโ€™s pressures with greater ease.

I work with individuals carrying ongoing responsibilities at work and at home who want to feel less caught up in stress, less exhausted and more able to switch off. If youโ€™d like to explore how this approach could support you personally, see how I work with individuals.

I also work with organisations to deliver workplace talks and training for managers, HR professionals and coaching teams who want to understand how stress affects people at work and what can help.
